It is that time of the year again – my favourite time, in fact – Mid-Autumn Festival or Mooncake Festival. For the Chinese, it is an important time of the year as it is a time of gathering for families. This ties back to the olden times when the festival was celebrated because it was the time of the year that crops were harvested. Families would gather to give thanks to the Mountain Gods for the year’s harvest. It also represented a time in the year where families would collectively pray for what they wanted – longevity, babies, marriages, a good future, etc.

In modern day, the Chinese still celebrate the festival by coming together as families. There is also the gifting of mooncakes to friends and family. As such, living in countries like Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Vietnam, eating mooncakes during this time of year is unavoidable. But mooncakes are actually one of the highest-calorie food snacks to consume. A mooncake can range anywhere from 600 to 950 calories!
